The Bridge

October 2025

4 min read

Friends,

Tonight the veil thins.
Shadows lengthen, candles flicker.

Halloween gives way to the Day of the Dead,
a time when endings and beginnings dance with greater intimacy.

We are invited to listen for what is dissolving
and to honor what still hums beneath the surface of change.

Welcome to the October issue of The Bridge.

Your monthly pause-point:

An insight.
A practice.
An expression.

And, if you’re called, ways to work together.

The bridge is here.
Let’s take the first step.

The Principle of Harmony

Halloween and Día de los Muertos illuminate a profound teaching:
Impermanence is not something to overcome rather to harmonize with.

When we dress in costumes and build altars for those who've transformed,
we practice what these sacred days have always known:

Peace comes from flowing with change, not resisting it.

These threshold days remind us that everything is always changing,
including our desires, our identities, our very selves.

The suffering comes not from the change itself
but from our struggle against it.

As Pema Chödrön teaches:

"Impermanence is a principle of harmony.
When we don't struggle against it, we are in harmony with reality.
"

The core teaching is this:

Every desire that moves through us extends the same invitation.

To witness what arises, abides, and ceases.
To develop our capacity to be present with impermanence itself.

Not through struggle or transcendence,
but through open awareness, wisdom, and compassion.

When we meet change this way,
we discover that harmony was always here,
waiting beneath our resistance.

Strengthen Your Capacity to Be with Change

Halloween plays with transformation.
Day of the Dead honors it.
Together, you can put these teachings into practice:

Light a candle for impermanence.

Tonight, or this weekend, in stillness, honor the desires that moved through you this past month.
Those that arose suddenly.
Those that consumed you.
Those that fulfilled themselves.
Those that simply faded.
Don't judge them.
Just witness: Each one was impermanence teaching itself.

Rest in open awareness.

Bring to mind a desire currently alive in you.
Notice its stage: arising, abiding, or ceasing.
Without trying to change anything, simply be present to exactly where it is.
This is the practice: witnessing with compassion as life moves through its natural rhythm.

Feel the harmony beneath.

Place your hands on your heart.
Breathe with Pema Chödrön's teaching: "Impermanence is a principle of harmony."
Feel how your breath demonstrates this.
Rising, falling.
Never struggling with itself.
This is what harmony feels like: awareness meeting change with compassion.

Seal with recognition.

You are not your desires.
You are the open awareness through which they move.
Rest here, in this recognition.
The witness and the witnessed, both impermanent.
The awareness itself, unchanging.
This is home.

Metabolize: A Visual Study on Impermanence

My latest collection, Metabolize, embodies Pema Chödrön's teaching through drawing, painting, and meditation practice.

Four pieces trace how desire moves through us when we stop struggling against its nature:

Arising, Pursuit, Fulfillment, Dissolution.

In Arising, brushstrokes gather like possibilities condensing from space.
No struggle here, just the natural emergence of form from formlessness.

The marks themselves demonstrate harmony:
Not forced into being, but allowed to emerge.

Pursuit flows with the natural momentum of desire.
Blues blend without resistance,
each gesture extending organically toward what calls it.

This is what wanting looks like when we stop fighting:
Fluid, dynamic, already perfect in its incompletion.

Fulfillment offers the moment of contact without grasping.
Colors warm and expand naturally,
boundaries dissolve not through force but through flow.

Here we see what Pema Chödrön points toward:
Completion is just another form of impermanence, nothing to cling to.

Finally, Dissolution shows what grace looks like.
The apple returns to earth not as tragedy but as harmony.

This is impermanence made visible:
Not loss, but transformation, continuing its eternal dance.

Together, these pieces don't just depict change;
They demonstrate what happens when we stop struggling against it.

Each artwork is impermanence in action,
showing us that harmony was always available,
waiting for us to stop fighting reality.

They become teachers of this core principle:

We don't need to change impermanence.
We need to change our relationship to it.

When we do, we find ourselves in harmony with the deepest truth of existence.

A Closing Thought

Tonight, as Halloween opens the door to transformation,
and tomorrow, as Day of the Dead celebrates continuity within change,
we stand together at October's bridge,
not needing to cross anywhere,
but simply to stop struggling against where we are.

Pema Chödrön's teaching is so simple it's radical:

Impermanence is already a principle of harmony.
We don't need to make peace with it.
We need to stop making war.

Every desire that moves through you is asking the same question:
Can you let me arise without grasping?
Can you let me intensify without controlling?
Can you let me fulfill without freezing?
Can you let me dissolve without resisting?

This is the practice. This is the path.

Not to stop desire, not to transcend change,
but to harmonize with the rhythm that's always been playing.

In this threshold season, may you find the courage to stop struggling,
the wisdom to flow with what's changing,
and the peace that comes from recognizing
that you were never separate from the harmony.

You were the struggle that obscured it.
And you are the awareness that can release it.

The bridge is where we already stand.
The harmony is what we already are.

We just need to stop fighting long enough to feel it.
